US Senator warns Venezuelan President to leave power
"If I was Maduro, I'd head to Russia or China right now," the Florida Republican told reporters in an interview published Sunday.
Scott added that Maduro's "days are numbered," predicting that "something's gonna happen" either from within the country or externally. When asked whether the US might invade Venezuela, Scott responded that he does not anticipate such action, noting, "If we do, I'd be surprised."
His remarks come amid rising military tensions in the region. A US warship arrived in Trinidad and Tobago on Sunday as pressure on Venezuela intensifies. Earlier in October, US President Donald Trump confirmed approval of CIA operations inside the country.
Scott also suggested that removing Maduro could signify "the end of Cuba," stating: "America is gonna take care of the Southern Hemisphere." While acknowledging that American war fatigue makes deploying ground troops "very difficult," he indicated that international forces could intervene "if they needed to."
Venezuela did not immediately comment on Scott’s statements. Maduro had previously criticized US military movements, accusing Washington of attempting to spark "a new eternal war." The country recently announced the deployment of 5,000 Russian-made Igla-S anti-aircraft missiles to strengthen air defenses. Meanwhile, the US has been carrying out strikes against suspected Venezuelan drug vessels in international waters.
