Cuba Mourns Combatants Killed in US Strike
Cuban President Miguel Diaz-Canel declared January 5 and 6 as national days of mourning, honoring those who, he said, fulfilled their duties with dignity and showed “fierce resistance” that reflected Cuba’s enduring tradition of international solidarity.
According to the Cuban government, the fallen personnel were on official assignments representing the Revolutionary Armed Forces and the Ministry of the Interior, deployed at Venezuela’s request as part of bilateral cooperation.
Venezuela also paid homage to the deceased, with officials in Caracas stating it “honors the 32 Cuban combatants who gave their lives in the fulfillment of their duty, in the context of cooperation and defense missions.”
US President Donald Trump confirmed earlier that many Cuban security officers tasked with protecting Maduro were killed during Saturday’s raid.
Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores, were flown to New York late Saturday and are currently detained at the Metropolitan Detention Center in Brooklyn. US authorities allege the couple faces federal charges tied to drug trafficking and collaboration with gangs designated as terrorist organizations.
